Experimental Setup, Planning, and Small Changes
In today's lab, we worked on our experimental design. We have three bins that we will store our crabs in and 2-3 jars that will house either the European Green Crab per condition, or the 4 Hairy Shore Crabs per condition, whatever makes more sense based on size (this will be decided the day of the experiment). The jars will be raised so that the air hole in the jar does not come in contact with the water and alert the other crabs that the other species is there; however, it will be submerged enough to maintain temperature. This means that both the bins and jars will each have their own air stone. Our three conditions are 15, 35, and 45 ppt. We will take a baseline osmolality measurement with our extra 2 crabs during experimental setup so that we go in to the experiment with 4 presumed healthy crabs in each condition, lowering out chances of fatality if osmolality were taken at experimental setup from experimental crabs.
